Circle of Discovery: Design - Earthquake

Activity.... Do – Think – Learn

An earthquake-proof building is a building that has been built to survive an earthquake. The building is built with special technology that has materials made in earthquake areas. No building, however, can be made 100% safe and building earthquake proof structures to be more effective is just trial and error.
Build the structure on the table and turn the dail to increase the strength of the earthquake.
What happens to the building as the earthquake increases?

The Science Bit

An earthquake places a sideways load on a building. So, in addition to making a building capable of holding up forces from gravity caused by the weight of the structure and its contents, an earthquake resistant structure can withstand considerable sideways force. This is done by tying in walls, floor, roof and foundation into a rigid box.
