Handshake Mirror

Activity.... Do – Think - Learn

Light is a form of energy which is affected by the material it meets.
What will happen to the light beam when you put a smooth material in its path?
Move your hand towards the mirror. What do you see?
Can you shake your hand?
What size is your hand?
Now pass your hand you’re the image of your hand. What do you see?

The Science Bit
If you put your hand in and it is placed greater than one focal length in front of the mirror, a real image is produced. It is called a real image because the actual, real, rays of light form the image. These images are always inverted and left-right reversed. This means that an image of your hand appears to come towards you and is upside down.

If you move your hand past the focal point (when you pass your hand through the image of your hand, towards the mirror) you will find that the virtual, upright image of your hand appears. The image is larger (magnified).
