Activity.... Do - Think - Learn
Human Muscles are able to power machines.
Turn the handle and see what you can power.
How many Watts (how much energy per second) can you produce?
What electrical device can you power?
How long do you think you could power it for?
The Science Bit
People power shows how much energy you can generate. A generator is a type of machine that converts movement energy (kinetic) into electrical energy. When the handle is turned a coil of wire rotates between powerful magnets. The magnetic field produces an electric current in the wire as it passes through it. The faster the coil rotates, the more electricity is produced.

Using Electricity
- That everyday appliances use electricity, these include things that light up, heat up, produce sound and move
- That some devices use batteries which supply electricity; these can be handled safely
- That an electrical device will not work if there is no battery or if there is a break in the circuit
