Summary
Many primary school teachers find this topic extremely challenging to teach.
The day aims to spread understanding and confidence of how to teach this
difficult but important topic.
- There will be activities to improve understanding using talk, pictures, modelling with people and objects.
- There will be some thinking, doing, looking and fun.
- There will be a chance to try things from the learners perspective.
- We will explore SC1 activities and give ideas, try investigations and look at reporting.
Outcome
Teachers will be able to teach the topic with increased confidence and knowledge
Target audience
Key stage 1 and 2 Teachers and/or Science Co-ordinators.

STEM CPD for Keystage 3 - Rocketing STEM into Space
INTECH invites teachers you to a CPD event to discover the opportunities and resources on offer to assist in delivering the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) curricula and providing enrichment and enhancement activities.
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and as part of this celebration INTECH is drawing together a wide selection of cross curricular activities, ideas and opportunities for teaching Keystage 3 students using Astronomy and Space as a theme.
The programme will include:
The INTECH planetarium
* INTECH’s presenter-led show “Neighbourhood Earth?- a great opportunity to link science lessons to a fun and informative experience.
* Pre-recorded show “Astronaut? - experience a rocket launch from inside the human body.
* Presenter-led show which flies through the known universe & beyond with scientists and engineers
* Sample pre and post visit KS3 resources.
Moon rocks, meteorites and microscopes
* Use INTECH’s computer microscopes to examine the samples of moon rocks and meteorites which can be loaned to teachers across the south.
Breaking Barriers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths lessons
* SSAT Lead Practitioner in Engineering, Helen Cushion, from City of Portsmouth Boys’ School, looks at NASA’s “Breaking Barriers: solving linear equations? resource material, she will provide a hands-on opportunity to use the resource material she has adapted for use in engineering, technology, science & maths lessons and provide copies of the powerpoint presentation and resource activities.
Hampshire Astronomy Group
* Volunteers will talk about the Clanfield Observatory and their educational resources, an ideal opportunity for teachers to arrange visits and in-school talks.
World Space Week
* How can your students be involved in WSW Activities - 4th to 10th October 2009.
* Engineers and scientist from EADS Astrium will talk about satellite building, putting the workplace into the curriculum.
STEM
* INTECH is the contract holder for the brokerage of STEM E & E activities in Hampshire. Regional and national schemes and challenges providers such as EDT, Go4SET, the BA, the Smallpeice Trust will be on hand to provide information about their exciting schemes
* Information about Space Days at INTECH for Gifted & Talented year 8 students, The Space Academy, The Faulkes Telescope, TEP
