Mnemonic competition

School visitors to INTECH have brought along a load of ways to remember the order of the eight planets in our solar system!

The names of the planets in order from the Sun are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Nepune.

These children have taken the first letter of each planet name in order (M, V, E, M, J, S, U, N) and made up a new sentence using words starting with these letters. Tricks like this that help you remember things are called "mnemonics".

So far, Jenny the Planetarium Manager's favourite mnemonic for the eight planets is this one, from Marcus at Broad Chalke Primary School:

My Very Energetic Monkey Just Swings Until Needed

She says "It's great because I can really imagine the monkey swinging there! Having a strong picture makes it easier to remember the mnemonic".

Here are some other favourites, also from Broad Chalke:

Most Vicars Eagerly Make Jolly Sermons Using Numbers (Frances)

Many Very Exhausted Men Just Sleep Until Noon (Hope)

And here are lots more from the same school. See what pictures these make in your mind! Thanks very much to everyone who brought a mnemonic in, especially those who took time to decorate them.
